Compared to the students around me, I had low SAT scores (verbal anyways) as well as school grades (was not in top 10%). So do not let that discourage you. Though you need to stand out in some way. Be active (not just a member) in various after-school activities, volunteer your free time, get promoted wherever you work, challenge yourself with as many honors classes as will fit in your schedule senior year.

Most important, make your essays shine. Get them proof read, spend the time to make them good.
